When A Blind Man Cries

"When A Blind Man Cries" is a slow, emotionally raw ballad by Deep Purple, recorded during the legendary Machine Head sessions in December 1971 and released in 1972 as the B-side to "Never Before." Despite never appearing on the original Machine Head album, it gained a strong cult following over the decades. For electric guitar players, it offers a masterclass in restrained, blues-driven phrasing and expressive soloing, showcasing a quieter but deeply emotive side of Ritchie Blackmore's playing style.

  • The track was recorded during the Machine Head sessions in December 1971 but was left off the final album lineup.
  • Released only as a B-side in 1972, it was overlooked initially yet became one of Deep Purple's most beloved deep cuts.
  • The song highlights slow blues phrasing on electric guitar, making it an excellent study in dynamics and emotional restraint.
