About Rosanna

Most guitarists come to "Rosanna" chasing that famous half-time shuffle groove, but the guitar parts deserve just as much attention. Toto built the track around a dense arrangement, and the rhythm guitar work in F major demands clean, tight chord voicings that sit precisely in the pocket at 104 BPM without fighting the keyboards or the busy drum pattern beneath them. The challenge is restraint: comping without cluttering, letting each voicing breathe. In E Standard tuning the chord shapes are familiar, but locking them rhythmically to that half-time feel is where most players struggle. Use the Practice Toolbar to loop a four- or eight-bar section slowed down until your strumming hand is landing exactly on the right subdivisions. The lead fills that punctuate the song are melodic and phrased carefully, so looping them slowed down is also worthwhile before bringing them back up to full tempo. Groove and precision matter far more here than speed.

  • The rhythm guitar parts sit in E Standard tuning and require precise chord comping that locks tightly into the song's half-time shuffle feel.
  • At 104 BPM the groove is mid-tempo, but the layered arrangement means sloppy timing on chord changes becomes very audible very quickly.
  • The melodic lead fills are short and interval-focused, making them good targets for slow, looped repetition before playing them at full speed.
