Guitar Through the Decades
The 1950s
Early pop rock guitar leaned on simple open chords and shuffle rhythms borrowed from rockabilly and rhythm and blues. Players kept arrangements clean and bright, often on hollow-body electrics with minimal gain. The focus was on crisp, percussive strumming that locked in with the vocal melody.

The 1960s
The Beatles and their contemporaries brought tight twin-guitar arrangements, jangly open chords, and a heavy use of capo to match vocal keys. Barre chords became more common as players moved up the neck, and cleaner Vox and Fender amp tones defined the decade. Fingerpicking patterns also appeared more frequently alongside straight strumming.

The 1970s
Pop rock guitar in the 1970s broadened its palette, mixing acoustic rhythm playing with occasional electric lead lines. Bands used more suspended and add9 chord voicings to give songs an open, airy feel. Clean chorus-free tones were standard, and acoustic guitars became a core part of the pop rock sound.

Power chords appeared more often, and many players combined rhythm guitar with punchy, melodic lead fills. The electric guitar took a more prominent role in arrangements alongside synthesizers.

The 2000s saw a return to clean, expressive guitar work with artists like John Mayer bringing blues-influenced lead playing into a pop rock context. Fingerpicking and hybrid picking became more visible, and open tunings appeared alongside standard tuning. Guitar tones stayed mostly clean or lightly broken up, letting the chord voicings and melodic lines carry the songs.

The 2010s
Pop rock in the 2010s was heavily shaped by artists like Ed Sheeran, who demonstrated how much a single acoustic guitar could accomplish through looping, percussive strumming, and close-voiced chord shapes. Capo use was widespread, and players often combined fingerpicking with rhythmic thumb-slap techniques. Electric guitar remained part of the genre but acoustic and acoustic-electric setups dominated.

The 2020s
Pop rock guitar in the 2020s continues to blend acoustic and electric approaches, with players borrowing chord colors from indie and folk. Lighter string gauges, open voicings, and capo positions are common tools for fitting guitar parts around dense pop productions. The emphasis remains on clean, supportive playing that serves the song rather than the solo.
