About Stars

"Stars" is one of the most guitar-packed recordings to come out of the 1980s charity session format, with an enormous cast of Hear 'n Aid contributors trading riffs and solos across the track. Playing it in E Standard at 120 BPM keeps things approachable in terms of speed, but the real challenge is matching the energy and conviction that each section demands. The song is built around driving Heavy Metal rhythm work, so tightening up your palm muting and pick attack matters as much as note accuracy. The solo sections are where most players will want to put in focused time: there are multiple lead passages in different styles back to back, and looping each one slowed down with the Practice Toolbar is the most efficient way to isolate and internalize them. Pay close attention to how the rhythm guitar holds the track together between solos, since that foundation is easy to overlook when the leads get all the attention.

  • The track features multiple guest guitarists each contributing lead sections, so learning it means adapting to several distinct playing styles in one song.
  • Running in E Standard tuning at 120 BPM, the tempo is steady enough for intermediate players to build up the rhythm parts before tackling the solos.
  • Tight palm-muted rhythm guitar is the backbone of the arrangement, and clean muting technique is worth drilling before you attempt the lead passages.
