Yngwie J.Malmsteen

Rising Force is the debut solo album by Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, released in 1984 through Polydor Records. Originally conceived as an instrumental side-project alongside his work with Alcatrazz, the album became a defining release in neoclassical and shred metal. For electric guitarists, it remains essential study material, showcasing Malmsteen's classical-influenced phrasing, sweep picking, and high-speed legato techniques that set a new standard for the instrument.

  • Rising Force was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 1986 Grammy Awards, a rare recognition for a shred metal album.
  • The album reached No. 60 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 14 on the Swedish albums chart upon its 1984 release.
  • Vocalist Jeff Scott Soto appears on the album, which originally shifted Malmsteen's plans from a pure instrumental side-project to a full solo release.

Yngwie's scalloped fretboard Strat enables the wide vibrato and effortless bending that define Rising Force's neoclassical tone. The instrument's single-coil clarity combined with DiMarzio stacked humbuckers preserves note articulation through his lightning-fast scalar runs.

The JCM800's midrange punch and harmonic richness allow Yngwie's intricate melodic lines to cut through massive stage volume without losing definition. Its natural tube saturation, when cranked, delivers the singing high-gain tone essential to his neoclassical attack.
