About Photograph Pt.2 - Solos

The solo section of "Photograph" is where Def Leppard's guitar work really earns its keep. Running at 120 BPM in E major and standard tuning, the solos sit in a comfortable range on paper, but nailing the phrasing and sustain that defined the Pyromania-era sound is a different matter. The twin-guitar interplay between Steve Clark and Phil Collen demands clean articulation on every bend and vibrato, because at this tempo any sloppiness in the upper register is immediately obvious. Focus on getting your bends perfectly in tune before worrying about speed. The hard rock feel here relies heavily on confident, controlled vibrato rather than raw velocity, so slow the passages right down using the Practice Toolbar and work each phrase as a unit. Looping it slowed down will also reveal the subtle rhythmic placement of each note, which is easy to gloss over when playing at full speed.

  • The solos are built around E major pentatonic phrasing in standard tuning, making them accessible but demanding in terms of bend accuracy and vibrato control.
  • Twin-guitar harmony lines are a key feature, so practising both the lead and the harmony part separately will give you a fuller understanding of the arrangement.
  • At 120 BPM the tempo is moderate, but sustaining clean note bends through each phrase requires a relaxed fretting-hand grip and consistent pick attack.
