Open A Guitar
Open strings form an A major chord. Used in blues and bottleneck slide guitar.
Open A tunes the guitar to an A major chord. The tuning is closely associated with blues bottleneck guitar, where the bright, cutting sound of the open A chord drives slide melodies up the neck. The feel is brighter and more aggressive than Open G or Open D.
The higher string tension compared to lower open tunings keeps the tone tight and the slide response snappy.

Open A for Slide Guitar
Open A puts the root on both the 6th and 1st strings, giving you a strong reference pitch at both ends of the neck. Slide patterns work the same as Open G and Open D but with a brighter tonal character. Blues players who want to cut through a band mix often prefer Open A for that reason.
Be aware that the higher pitch means more string tension than open tunings built on G or D. Standard gauge strings work fine here.
