Drop B Guitar

B F# B E G# C# 2 songs · 2 artists

Very low tuning popular in djent and extreme metal.

Drop B enters extreme territory. The lowest string sits at B1, giving you a bass-guitar-like rumble on a six-string. Djent, progressive metal and deathcore bands like Periphery and August Burns Red use this tuning to access those ultra-low chugs while keeping the one-finger power chord layout.

This tuning demands serious string gauge. Anything below .013 on the high string will feel too loose. Many players use dedicated baritone or extended-scale guitars for Drop B.

Drop B Setup

A 26.5" or 27" scale length guitar handles Drop B much better than a standard 25.5" instrument. The longer scale keeps the strings tighter at low pitch. Intonation and action will both need careful setup. The tone benefits from a tight, focused distortion with controlled low end, otherwise the mud becomes unmanageable.
