Air On G String

"Air on G String" is August Wilhelmj's 1871 arrangement of the second movement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068. Transposed down to C major so the melody sits entirely on the violin's lowest string, it became one of Bach's most recognized pieces. For electric guitar players, its slow, melodic phrasing makes it an excellent study in tone control, sustain, and expressive legato technique.

  • The piece is transposed to C major from the original D major, making it approachable for guitarists working in open or standard positions.
  • Wilhelmj's 1871 arrangement was designed so the entire melody can be played on a single string — a compelling challenge on guitar.
  • The original composition is the second movement of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, BWV 1068, written for full string orchestra.
