About Incantations

Drop D tuning gives "Incantations" its low-end weight, letting Darkenhöld drop the sixth string for heavy open-string riffs while keeping the upper strings free for the melodic lines that run through Black Metal in this style. The core challenge here is managing the contrast between those grinding, down-tuned rhythm sections and the cleaner, atmospheric lead passages that the band weave above them. Tremolo picking is central to the texture, and keeping it even at tempo over long stretches demands real right-hand stamina. The left hand needs to stay loose, especially through any sustained chord shapes in Drop D, where muting unwanted string noise becomes its own discipline. Take the busiest tremolo runs or the transitions between rhythm and lead and loop them slowed down with the Practice Toolbar until the picking hand stays relaxed at full speed. Building this one section at a time is far more effective than running it from top to bottom repeatedly.

  • Drop D tuning lowers the sixth string by a whole step, enabling heavier open-string root notes while the remaining strings stay in standard position.
  • Sustained tremolo picking over long melodic phrases is the primary technique demand, requiring consistent right-hand endurance and relaxed picking mechanics.
  • The contrast between dense rhythm riffing and cleaner atmospheric lead lines means you need to practise both textures as separate, distinct skills.

How to Play Incantations

Tuning: Drop D

The drop D tuning lets you fret the low power chords with a single finger, which is central to the heavier riffing here.

Use the section loop to isolate a passage and drop the speed to build each section up to tempo.
