Ave Maria

"Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert, originally titled "Ellens dritter Gesang" (Ellen's Third Song), was composed in 1825 as part of Op. 52, a cycle of seven songs drawn from Walter Scott's narrative poem The Lady of the Lake. Though written for voice and piano, its sweeping, arpeggiated harmonic structure translates beautifully to electric guitar, making it a rewarding piece for players looking to develop fingerpicking technique, chord voicing, and melodic phrasing across the fretboard.

  • The piece originated as a vocal work set to text from Walter Scott's 1810 poem The Lady of the Lake, not a traditional hymn.
  • Schubert composed this as one of seven songs in Op. 52 — learning the full cycle offers rich harmonic exploration for guitarists.
  • The slow, sustained melodic lines make this an excellent study piece for electric guitar tone control and dynamic expression.
