Carol Of the Bells

"Carol of the Bells" is a beloved Christmas carol originally based on "Shchedryk," a Ukrainian New Year's song. The music was composed and arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych between 1901 and 1916, with English lyrics added in 1936 by Peter Wilhousky. Its driving, repetitive four-note motif makes it a rewarding and technically interesting piece to arrange and perform on electric guitar, offering great practice for picking precision and melodic phrasing.

  • The melody is built on a four-note ostinato, making it excellent practice for repetitive picking patterns and right-hand consistency.
  • The carol originates from "Shchedryk," a Ukrainian folk song celebrating the New Year, not Christmas.
  • English lyrics were added by American composer Peter Wilhousky in 1936, decades after Leontovych composed the original melody.
